Social Media Week: February 7 – 11
We’re always excited when Social Media Week rolls around in New York City, and this year, it’s expanded to more cities around the globe, including San Francisco, Rome, Paris, Toronto, Sao Paulo, London, Hong Kong, and Istanbul. The conference was established to recognize and celebrate developments in collaborative and mobile media, and the innovators behind them. Yesterday, Social Media Week held its opening ceremony and press conference in New York, where Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith offered a keynote address on how the City is leveraging digital media to improve the way it does business and meet the needs of its many customers.
Over the course of next week there will be over 150 events across the City, many of which have free registration. This year, we are especially looking forward to hosting our first City-sponsored panel (see our first pick below!). To help you navigate the week, here are some other events that caught our eye. The lion-hearted Egyptians I met on Tahrir Square are risking their lives to stand up for democracy and liberty, and they deserve our strongest support — and, frankly, they should inspire us as well. A quick lesson in colloquial Egyptian Arabic: Innaharda, ehna kullina Misryeen! Today, we are all Egyptians!
We are often told that privacy is disappearing, that the most intimate secrets are open to public probing. But the reality is the opposite: what is effectively disappearing is public space, with its attendant dignity.
i love how guy fawkes lives on!
For the first time in a generation, it is not religion, nor the adventures of a single leader, nor wars with Israel that have energized the region. Across Egypt and the Middle East, a somewhat nostalgic notion of a common Arab identity, intersecting with a visceral sense of what amounts to a decent life, is driving protests that have bound the region in a sense of a shared destiny.
There are no technical impediments to a fully transparent Congress. Computers can handle this. The challenges, however, are institutional and practical.
